Every small business owner wants to know how to stay motivated and focused when the complexity of their business takes over.

We only have the ability to stay motivated and stay focused for a short period of time.

Every business operates within a whirlwind of activity, with your time and energy spread thinly.

Think about the amount of activity you have to attend to during the day,

Complexity reduces motivation and focus

All of the emails to send and calls to make.

Sales to achieve and marketing to do.

Social media updates to make and admin to manage.

A team and clients to keep happy

It’s hard to stay motivated and focused.

Many have urgent deadlines which can smother creativity and create a lack of time to focus on new initiatives.

So, what can you do to maintain focus on making progress on your major goals?

How to stay motivated

The key to stay motivated is limit your time and activity to work that you love to do, are great at and brings in the greatest revenue.

Working this way, with clients who love working with, ensures your passion and motivation are always aligned.

The best way to stay motivated is to power up your self-motivation. You can light your own fire.

It is not enough to wait for inspiration to kickstart your forward progress.

It doesn’t have to be something that happens to you, it can be something that you create.

All progress and motivation starts with taking action. One action will lead to another. Action will create better outcomes and new experiences for you.

When my coaching clients suffer from distraction, I simply get them to start taking action. To get fired up. To do something specific.

This may be getting up earlier, or committing to achieving something specific every day.

Even if it’s doing something for just 5 minutes, it’s often that little push that is enough to get them going and to increase motivation.

If you focus on a small number of things to create the change you want, it can have a dramatic effect on your business and life.

Be motivated and focused

Here are four simple strategies you can use to stay motivated and focused:

1. Focus on the really important goals

A lot of the activities that happen in the day to day running of your business can be grouped into ‘bad work’ ‘good work’ and ‘great work’

The good work is important, often the lifeblood of your business.

It’s the important, productive work, some of which is exciting and others which can be mundane but ‘have to happen’.

Many tasks seem important and urgent but can you describe them as ‘great work?’

Great work is activity that means something to you, is your highest level, revenue generating activities that deliver impact and make a difference.

Most of the tasks in the day-to-day running of your organisation are urgent but not necessarily

The great work is often the 20% of work that can deliver 80% of the results for your business so it’s essential that you carve out some time to focus on this work.

When you commit to achieving goals it’s always a great idea to translate the concepts as targets and think about the amount of good work and great work you need to accomplish the goals.

2. Track your progress

When you’re pursuing a new goal it’s important that you track your progress to give you motivation and focus.

This gives you constant stimulation, encouragement and confidence that you can achieve what you’ve set out to achieve.

You can use previous examples of success to spur you on.

Explore what you’ve achieved already to boost your confidence.

Look at what’s working, what your challenges are and what progress you’ve made.

Track your progress, analyse what’s working right now, reflect on how you’re feeling and move forward with energy. motivation and focus.

3. Maintain a personal scorecard

The best way to stay motivated and focused is to keep track of your progress towards your goals.

Then celebrate success every day,

This gives you and something visible to refer to.

If you’ve achieved something important why not get some friends together and go out to dinner and share what you’ve done?

This creates the added benefit of getting those friends involved so they are constantly rooting for your success.

Take some time out to reflect on your progress. ?

Spend an afternoon of Me Time, just enjoying some time away from the business.

This reflects boosts motivation and progress.

Celebrating your success and building up more energy will help you moving confidently towards your goals.

Create some positive affirmations and have them on your desk or on your wall.

Refer to them in times of difficulty or when you achieve success.

Find something visual or emotional that works for you.

4. Build in personal accountability

If you don’t have a coach or mentor to work with, the best way to fight back against the whirlwind of activity is to be clear on your most urgent and important work.

Then build in regular catch ups with a supportive friend.

When you’re working in your business make sure you lift your head up every day and give yourself some time to work on the business and check in with your accountability partner.

To stay motivated and focused, reflect on what progress you’ve made and the great work you’ve accomplished.  a

If you don’t have anyone, then create a daily reflection hour when you can review your progress and get motivated and focused again for the days ahead.

Over to you.
