How to build self-confidence

Here are 9 tips for building self-confidence.

1. Set goals

It’s easy to lose confidence if you don’t have measurable goals to work towards each day.  Being confident means being clear on what is important to you, and making progress in those areas.

Goals give your life direction and focus.  Having goals to work towards builds self-confidence when you see positive progress towards goal achievement.

Read my guide on how to set and achieve goals.

2. Talk yourself up

Building self-confidence is about feeling better and more positive about yourself.  You can build your self-confidence by talking yourself up each day.  Highly confident people start and end each day by recognising something positive in their lives.  Their self-confidence grows by celebrating things that have gone well.

The process of starting and ending the day on a positive note, helps you be kind to yourself and builds your self-confidence.  When you feel like you’re achieving, your confidence grows.

3. Recognise what you’re good at

To build your self-confidence it’s important to recognise what you’re good at.  Highly confident people focus on their strengths, rather than their weaknesses.

Instead of trying to fix your weaknesses, building your self-confidence by identifying the unique strengths you have.  You’ll increase your self-confidence faster when you spend more time doing activities you love to do and are great at.

4. Be kind to yourself

It’s hard to feel good about yourself and self-confident if you don’t feel good about yourself.  Highly confident people are kind to themselves and develop the habits that build self-confidence.  It’s important to build self-confidence physically, mentally, and spiritually.

To build self-confidence, make time to practice self-care.  You can build your self-confidence by developing an abundance mindset, journaling, and expressing gratitude daily.

5. Don’t compare yourself to others

Comparing yourself to others can lower your self-confidence and self-esteem.  People who compare themselves to others feel guilt, envy, and fear of missing out.

The purpose of having self-confidence is to put your mind into a productive mindset so you can see the possibilities and opportunities around you.  Comparing your situation or your level of success to others creates a scarcity mindset.

A scarcity mindset can cause you to question your ability, which lowers self-confidence.  When you have self-confidence you can focus on yourself and celebrate your capabilities and achievements.

If you’re struggling with FOMO, learn how to overcome fear of missing out.

6. Plan your day

Some days you may feel more confident than others.  One of the most important factors in developing confidence is planning and taking control of your day.  When you start your day feeling confident you can achieve greater results during the day.

If you can learn to master the start and end of your day, you will quickly gain greater confidence and self-esteem.  To help you do this, start each day with a morning routine that identifies the things you want to achieve that day.

You can also end each day feeling confident by identifying the things you achieved that day.  This ensures that you feel like you’re making positive progress every day.

7. Create positive daily habits

Confidence grows when you build positive daily habits.  When your goals are important to you making progress every day becomes a constant in your life.

You can build self-confidence by having the willingness and perseverance to show up every day and work towards those goals.  Taking action builds confidence and ensures you feel like you’re making progress.

8. Focus on value creation

To be more confident, shift your focus from yourself to others.  Build your self-confidence by helping others achieve their goals.

By focusing on creating value and helping others, your confidence will grow.  You’ll feel great about yourself and will feel grateful for the skills you used to help those people.

Your confidence will grow when you can make a difference in the life of someone important to you.

9. Work with a coach

To build your self-confidence it’s important to surround yourself with people who make you feel good about yourself.  Working with a coach, or mentor will give you greater belief and increase your confidence.

Working with a coach will give you greater clarity, direction, and confidence.  A coach will believe in you, support you, and create a safe space to discuss problems and challenges.  This will help you feel more confident about yourself.

Having someone to help you set goals and ensure you focus on your priorities ensures you don’t lose confidence and self-esteem.  When things get rough, having a support structure will ensure you always stay confident and have a clear path to follow
