Time management is about understanding the value of your time, and leveraging that time to create the biggest impact with your time in your professional and personal life.

Mastering time management allows you to create a better work-life balance, do more of the things you’re best at, and set yourself up to be more productive and creative in the areas that matter most.

If you can’t manage your time your life will be full of complexity, confusion, excessive stress, fatigue and work that doesn’t motivate or energise you.

Here are 7 habits you can use to master productivity and increase time freedom:

1. Achieve More by Working Less

Knowing how to take control of your time means you can leverage your time and productivity to achieve higher performance and results in shorter periods of time with less effort.

Think about how much more you accomplish when you are fully energised and focused on the projects and people that excite you.

Prioritising your most important tasks and then working in blocks of time is a simple habit to implement to do more with less effort.

Utilise your energy levels to work on the biggest opportunities when you feel inspired and motivated.

Outsource or delegate tasks and projects that are lower value and don’t bring in the revenue that your high value work does.

If you find an extra hour of productivity in your day by using your time wisely, that gives you an additional 20 productive hours at work every week.

Think what you could do with that extra time.

2. Make Work Exciting and Motivating

We’ve all done work that we think has to be done, even though it’s energy draining and uninspiring.

If you’re like me, there’s nothing more frustrating than spending a day being completely busy but also entirely unproductive.

Getting to the end of the day with lots of unfinished tasks can be demotivating and drain your energy.

Any feeling of accomplishment or making progress, however small, helps you stay motivated at work.

When you have made progress in a day, this sets you up for a more productive day the following day.

It also translates into helping you relax and enjoy the time you spend with your family and friends.

By being conscious of how you use time, you’ll have more of it to spend on the things you love, and have the biggest impact.

3. Start Taking Focused Action

It’s difficult to take focused action if you aren’t clear on the ideal future you want to create.

When you are clear on your vision, and know what direction you want to travel in, the importance of managing your time effectively becomes much simpler.

Worrying about where you should spend your time and on what projects and people can be time-consuming.

Once you have this clarity and confidence on where you’re heading you’re ready to take more focused action, which naturally means you’re more productive.

Instead of staring blankly at your to-do list wondering what to tackle, you will have a clear plan and path ahead of you.

This keeps you focused and energised and ensures you don’t waste time questioning what you should do next.

4. Achieve Goals Quicker

Many people set lots of goals and then run out of steam and leave the biggest goals unfulfilled.

Without a clear understanding of the importance of time management, and how your time should be used to focus on these goals, many will sit on the shelf indefinitely, waiting to be started.

The first step is to set less goals.  I recommend only setting 5 goals every 90 days.

Each goal must be energising and excite you enough to commit the time to achieve them.

This commitment completely frees up your time and narrows your focus.

You can then lay out a clear path with the action steps needed to achieve each specific goal.

5. Increase Confidence and Motivation

Time management can improve your motivation and confidence.

You’re more likely to achieve your biggest goals and do the things that are important to you if you’ve prioritised them.

When people say they don’t have time this is simply not true.

It means they haven’t prioritised and the projects, goals are people are not exciting enough to spend their time on.

When you make progress every day and recognise what you’ve achieved, you’ll get a regular boost from feeling a sense of accomplishment.

Achieving goals, getting a small win are huge motivators. On the flip-side, failing to finish your to-do list each day, meeting deadlines and doing what you say you’ll do are huge energy drainers that can lead to stress and burnout.

6. Have Increased Energy

Constantly feeling worn out, stressed, frustrated and fatigued can be really miserable.

It also makes it much harder to work on your goals and to take on the obstacles and challenges we face.

Taking time out of your business to rejuvenate and energise ensures you are always at peak productivity and creativity levels.

When my coaching clients spend two hours with me they come out feeling clear, energised and focused.

In addition to this time with me, I recommend they take at least one rejuvenation day (not week-ends) out of their business each month with no work distractions.

They always report they come back clearer, with a renewed boost of focus and energy.

7. Remove Feelings of Overwhelm

When you have 10-15 tasks on your to do list and every task seems equally important, it’s very easy to feel overwhelmed.

The first step is to reduce your to-do list.  I recommend people have a maximum of 5 things on their to-do list each day.

Good time management skills then allow you to look at this reduced to-do list, and to prioritise your most important activities related to your 90 day goals.

Look at which tasks only you can do and explore delegating or outsourcing some specific tasks or projects to free up your time and increase effectiveness.

If you do that, the result is a calmer and more-accomplished you.
