If you want to learn how to set goals and achieve them or improve your goal achievement then setting measurable goals is the most powerful method you can use.

Measurable goals are essential for measuring the progress and growth you want in your business and life.  When you reach a goal you feel more confident and you build momentum in business and life.

Many people struggle with goal setting because they set goals without a clear measurement to work toward or deadline to achieve the goal in.

There is no track to follow.  No clear destination to be reached.  And no deadline to reach it in.

As a business coach I help entrepreneurs and small business owners set long-term goals and short-term goals, which include 90-day goals, monthly goals, weekly goals and daily goals.

This process of setting measurable goals helps them get more focused and more productive.

What I’ve realised through coaching these clients, and through twenty years of business experience is that measurable goals matter if you want to achieve your goals.

In fact, they are essential and I would set the only way to set your goals.

What are measurable goals?

Measurable goals are personal goals and professional goals that have a number or an event attached to the goal and a deadline to achieve the goal in.

Setting measurable goals means that you clearly identify exactly what it is you want to achieve so you emotionally and intellectually engage with the outcome of the goal you set for yourself.

It is then about breaking long-term goals down into short-term goal, including monthly goals and daily goals that can be measured and tracked. means breaking the goal down into specific, measurable elements that can be tracked.

Part of the power of having measurable goals is that you know when you’ve reached your destination meaning your goal achievement.

Examples of measurable goals 

To maximise your chance of achieving your goals in business and life, set measurable goals.

There are two elements of measurable goals: the goal must be a number or an event and have a deadline attached to it.

To bring measurable goals to life, here are a few goal setting examples that my coaching clients have used in the past. 

Number based measurable goals

Below are a few examples of number based measurable goals:

I will free up 30 hours of time in the next 30 days.

Increase my revenue by 20% in the next 6 months.

Grow my email list by 500 by June 30.

Increase my YouTube subscribers to 5,000 by July 1.

Lose one stone by May 30.

Event based measurable goals

Here are a few examples of event based measurable goals:

I will speak to five groups of people in the next 30 days

Run 5k in under 30 minutes

Visit Bali in 2020

Start my new business by end September

Open my second yoga studio by October 1

Examples of long-term goals 

Long-term goal setting is about getting clarity up front about what goals you want to achieve at a specific point in the future.  These can be goals of life, personal goals or professional goals.

Set your goals by choosing a time frame of who you want to be, and what you want to have in the future.  Time periods that many people use for long-term goal setting include 25 years, 10 years, 5 years or 3 years.

These goals to set for yourself are based on where you are now and where you want to get to be in the future.  To create the best chance of long-term goal achievement you need to be emotionally invested and intellectually engaged in the future outcome you want.

When you have your goal setting time period, choose a small number of goals to achieve to simplify your focus.  When you set goals that have too many objectives it’s easy to create complexity and complication, rather than focus.

Examples of short-term goals

Once you set your long-term goals for a date in the future, the next step is short-term goal setting.  If you want to achieve your goals and build momentum and motivation in your business and life short-term goals are the answer.

It’s easier to reach a goal when the time period isn’t too far ahead.  When you have measurable goals and a short deadline, you become much more motivated and focused.

Again, set your goals by setting a time frame that is important to you.  I always work with my coaching clients on 90-day goals, but this is supported by monthly goals, daily goals and other performance goals.

If you want to achieve your goals, set a small number of goals for your time period.  I recommend a maximum of 5 goals to focus on, to maximise your chances of goal achievement.

Achieve your goals by tracking performance 

If you want to achieve your goals, tracking your performance and progress towards your goal achievement is essential to build confidence, momentum and motivation.

Some people find it valuable to track their progress, monthly, weekly and even daily.

But there is a right way to do it and a wrong way to do it.

Many people struggle with goal achievement because they measure forwards, which is the wrong way to do it.

When you measure forwards, goals can feel far away and out of reach.

If you’re not making the progress you want you may give up, question your capabilities and start getting down on yourself.

The right way to achieve your goals is to measure backwards, from where you started.

Examples of goals that can be tracked 

Let me give you an example of goals that can be tracked to represent what I mean.

One of my clients set a goal to get to 5k YouTube subscribers in 6 months.

She started off very slow as this was a new capability and platform to master.

The first month only saw 300 subscribers.

In the second month her subscribers only grew by a further 200, so 500 subscribers in 2 months.

She had two options.

Get really disappointed and frustrated with her progress because she was so far away from her target of 5k subscribers.

Or, celebrate her progress because she has 500 more subscribers than she did when she started.

She chose to follow the second route and celebrate her goal achievement.

This gave her the confidence, commitment and belief that she could hit her goal of 5k in that six-month period, which she did.

Always measure your progress, and always measure backwards.

Summing Up

When setting goals that are measurable remember to set goals that are specific, that have a number or event associated with a goal and ensure that the goal has a deadline.

This goal setting framework will set you up for goal achievement both personally and professionally.
